mainland. There has been considerable activity in private

building operations there and indications are not wanting

that the extension of Kowloon may eventually relieve

the pressure of population on the Island. This movement

is likely to increase when the terminus of the Canton-

-Kowloon Railway and the line near it are definitely

located.

The Public Works Department was

during the greater part of the year in charge of Mr. P. N.

H. Jones, A.M.I.C.E., Assistant Director, and I was well

satisfied by the manner in which this gentleman carried

out the arduous and responsible duties that devolved on

him in the absence of Mr. W. Chatham, M.I.C.E., the

Director.
